Why Do “Life Sentences” Never Amount to Life Behind Bars for Convicted Criminals?

Question by Bull’s No 9: Why do “Life Sentences” never amount to life behind bars for convicted criminals?
Should criminals who have been sentenced to life imprisonment not be forced to serve exactly that, life in prison, where does the concept “parole” and “rehabilitation” originate, i find them ridiculous concepts?
I personally find it even more ridiculous, that here in South Africa we hear of criminals receiving life sentences and thereafter walking free after 25 years……is 20 or 25 years regarded as an entire life in your opinion?
